This is the heaviest leopards' average that I can find, is there any hyena population with a higher average?

Ah, no. Nile crocodiles are also African predators, & they'll certainly grow a fair bit larger than hyena ever do.

There is a reaosn the spotted hyena is called the second largest carnivore and not the leopard. Anyway, here are the weights:

Quote:The spotted hyena is the largest extant member of the Hyaenidae.[47] Adults measure 95–165.8 cm (37–65 in) in body length, and have a shoulder height of 70–91.5 cm (28–36 in).[27] Adult male spotted hyenas in the Serengeti weigh 40.5–55.0 kg (89–121 lb), while females weigh 44.5–63.9 kg (98–141 lb). Spotted hyenas in Zambia tend to be heavier, with males weighing on average 67.6 kg (149 lb), and females 69.2 kg (153 lb).[36] Exceptionally large weights of 81.7 kg (180 lb)[9] and 90 kg (198 lb)[27] are known. It has been estimated that adult members of the now extinct Eurasian populations weighed 102 kg (225 lb).

I put a leopard population averaging 72 kg, is there any hyena population whose average goes up to 70 kg? Besides, by my knowledge the heaviest leopard weighed 96 kg.

Quote:For adult male leopards, highest mean weight for adult males is 68kg from Kwazulu Natal, South Africa. "Applicability of Age-Based Hunting Regulations for African Leopards" 2012

Also, the average weight of adult male leopards in the Tuli Predator Project (Botswana) was 70.3kg. See here: http://tulipredatorproject.ning.com/prof...rd-capture

Probably old leopards that weight a bit more, but wouldn't perform aswell compared to specimens in peak of their health.

The point was to prove how hyenas don't have any considerable edge over leopards regarding size, the leopards ranging from 4 to 6 years old averaged 66 kg, the difference with the 69 kg average for females hyenas in zambia is only 3 kg. You linked yourself leopards averaging 70 kg, by what I know the heaviest average for hyenas is that of zambia so both have about the same size as opposed to what blue bear said. Leopards vary much more than hyenas regarding weight so if we average all the leopard subspecies/populations and do the same with hyenas the latter is likely going to have the highest mean weight.
